HISTORY OF THE MT. TABOR CHURCH
A Presbyterian Church at Mt.Tabor was initially organized in late 1840
across the street from where the current church building is located.
However, in 1854, that initial church was dissolved. However, services
and school classes continued at the site for the next several decades. In
fact, in 1893, a new church building was contructed on the same site.
Intermittent services continued at the new site until 1914.
On December 13, 1914, the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian of which we are a
part today, was formed. Services have been continuous since that time.
In August of 1953, the church purchased the land on which the current
building sits. However, it was not until 1958 that a building was
contructed on the site. The back "square" of the present building was
contructed as an educational building in 1958. Then, the upper floor was
used as a sanctuary, and the lower floor housed classrooms. The old
building across the street was eventually torn down in the 1960s.
In 1978, the church started construction on the current sanctuary after
four years of planning. The first service in the new sanctuary was held on
July 8, 1979. Since then we have been "sprucing up" the building and
grounds in order to make Mt. Tabor a more beautiful place to worship.
More recently, we have added the bell tower and canopy to the church.
